To say that Windows users are in the minority these days would be an understatement. More than 80% of desktop computers worldwide run some version of the Linux operating system, and more than 10% run Mac OS X or iOS, which means that most of us have been forced to leave behind the Windows platform we grew up with and loved so much, right? Wrong!

Even though you may have switched to Linux (or Mac OS X or iOS), there are still plenty of tricks and hacks you can use to stay up-to-date with what’s happening in the world of Windows.


We all have our favorite applications that we use on a daily basis. To make life easy, Windows has a built-in feature that allows you to quickly open an application by pressing the Windows key + R. Type in the name of the application you want to open and hit enter. The application will launch instantly.


The first step is to right-click on an empty spot on the taskbar. A menu will pop up and you should click on Taskbar Settings.

This will open up the settings window for the taskbar. In the middle of this window, there is a slider under the heading Taskbar buttons.

Slide this all the way to the left to make your taskbar icons smaller. If you want to go one step further, you can also check the box that says Use small taskbar buttons.

This will make your taskbar even more compact by getting rid of the labels for each icon.


If you want a program or app to automatically start up when your computer does, there are a few ways to make that happen. In this post, we’ll show you how to do it in Windows 10. This can be really helpful if you have a program that you always use or need to have running in the background.

It can make your life easier by not having to remember to open it every time you turn on your computer. Plus, it can make life easy for other people who use your computer if they know the program will be open and available.

Go to the Start button and scroll to find the app you want to run at startup.

Right-click the app, select More, and then select Open file location. Location where the shortcut to the app is saved,will open. If there isn’t an option for Open file location, it means the app can’t run at startup.

With the file location open, press the Windows logo key + R, type shell:startup, then select OK. This opens the Startup folder.

Drag and drop the shortcut to the app from the file location to the Startup folder.

While you’re at it, there are a few other programs that also benefit from running at startup. Some antivirus software will scan your computer each time it boots up, and being able to run that scan automatically can save you a lot of trouble. The same goes for backup software.

If you have software or programs that should always be running in order to make your life easier, don’t forget to set them up so they run automatically when you boot up your computer. These include antivirus, email backup services (such as Dropbox), cloud storage apps (such as iCloud), and VPN connections.

Many operating systems have built-in ways to schedule automated tasks, such as scheduled backups or scans.

To do this, go to Start > Default Programs > Associate a file type or protocol with a program. Scroll down the list until you find the file extension you want to change, then click on it and select Change program.

Choose the program you want to use from the list or browse for it if it’s not listed. Once you’ve made your selection, click on OK. From now on, files with that extension will open in your chosen program automatically. This little trick can make your life a lot easier when working with different types of files.

If you drag a folder over another folder, they will be merged, but if you drag a folder over an open space, it will simply be moved without being deleted. If you want to avoid dragging files into open space, which can result in accidental deletion, just hold Alt while dragging instead. If you don’t want to merge any folders together when dragging them, press Shift instead.

If you’re someone who locks their computer when stepping away from it, but doesn’t want to type your password every time, you can add a numerical PIN to access your PC. Go to the Control Panel in your Start menu, then User Accounts and Family Safety > User Accounts > Sign-in Options. Select Pin sign-in from there and use those numerical digits to log into your PC from now on.

Or You can just use the Windows + L button to lock your computer screen.
